What Is Anti-Static Workwear?

Anti-static workwear is protective clothing made with conductive fibers — typically a woven carbon-fiber grid — that safely dissipates electrostatic charge from the wearer's body and clothing, preventing incendiary sparks in explosive atmospheres. In Europe it is certified to EN 1149-5, with the fabric tested for surface resistivity (EN 1149-1) or charge decay (EN 1149-3); it protects only as part of an earthed system that includes dissipative footwear and grounded flooring. How It Works · The Physics Your Certificate Depends On

Static Doesn't Disappear. It Gets Escorted to Ground.

A worker walking across a plant floor can carry 10,000+ volts of tribocharge; in a flammable vapor zone, the discharge energy of a fingertip spark exceeds the minimum ignition energy of most hydrocarbon vapors many times over. Anti-static clothing doesn't block that charge — it gives it a controlled, continuous path away from the body before it can jump as a spark. Which is why the garment is only ever one link in an earthed chain, and why we print the system rule on every spec sheet we issue.

Engineering note buyers rarely hear: humidity is the invisible variable. Charge decay that passes at 50% relative humidity can slow dramatically in a 15% RH winter warehouse or air-conditioned Gulf control room. That's why EN 1149 testing is conditioned at 25% RH — the hard case — and why we quote fabrics by their low-humidity performance, not their best-day numbers. If a competitor's datasheet doesn't state the test humidity, that omission is the datasheet.

Expert note: the most common specification error we correct is a tender demanding "EN 1149-1 certified clothing." EN 1149-1 is a fabric test method, not a garment certificate — clothing certifies to EN 1149-5, which then references the fabric tests. LIBRARY 01 · THE EN 1149 FAMILY TREE

Five parts, two that matter daily

EN 1149 is a family, and knowing the branches prevents expensive confusion. Part 1 measures surface resistivity — how easily charge moves across the fabric face; Part 2 measures vertical resistance through the fabric (rarely cited for garments); Part 3 measures charge decay and shielding — how fast an induced charge dissipates, the fairer test for grid and core-conductive constructions whose surface reading can mislead; Part 4 was never published as expected; Part 5 is the garment standard that binds it together, adding design requirements — coverage of conductive parts, shielded closures, marking — and pointing back to Parts 1 or 3 for fabric performance. When a datasheet cites "EN 1149" without a part number, it is citing the family name and telling you nothing; when a tender demands "Part 1 certified clothing," it is asking for a fabric test to walk around on legs. Both errors are correctable in one polite email, and we send several a month.

LIBRARY 02 · IEC 61340-5-1, WITHOUT THE MYSTIQUE

The electronics ecosystem standard

Where EN 1149-5 protects atmospheres, IEC 61340-5-1 protects product: it defines the ESD control program for facilities handling discharge-sensitive devices, and garments are one controlled element among flooring, benches, wrist straps and ionization. Practical consequences for buyers: garment requirements are expressed as resistance ranges (point-to-point and, in groundable systems, garment-to-groundable-point), the garment must play its role in the facility's own verified program rather than carry a standalone "certificate," and periodic verification is assumed — which is why our ESD lots ship with measured data rather than a laminated claim. If your plant's quality manual references ANSI/ESD S20.20, relax: the two documents are harmonized siblings, and evidence formatted for one satisfies auditors of the other with a cover note we're happy to draft.

Where the garment fits in the legal machinery

The ATEX workplace directive (99/92/EC) and national transpositions (like the UK's DSEAR) oblige employers to classify zones, prevent ignition sources and document it all in an explosion protection document. Clothing appears as one ignition-source control among earthing, bonding, ventilation and intrinsically-safe equipment — which reframes the purchase: you are not buying a magic suit, you are buying a documented component of someone's legal defense. 5×5 mm carbon grid — the industrial default

A two-direction lattice gives redundant charge paths: cut, abrade or contaminate one filament and its neighbors keep draining. Best durability through 50+ industrial washes, the platform we specify for refineries, tank farms and anywhere the garment leads a hard life. Weight range 210–320 gsm in poly-cotton and FR bases; the marginally higher fabric cost buys the longest certified service life in the lineup.

ARCHITECTURE 02 · STRIPE

5 mm warp stripe — economy with integrity

Single-direction carbon stripes cost less and suit knits and lighter shirting where a full grid stiffens the hand. Passes EN 1149-3 charge decay comfortably when engineered right — the qualifier matters, because stripe spacing wider than 10 mm to save carbon is the classic corner-cut. Ours holds 5 mm, and the datasheet states it, because a stripe you can't see spacing on is a stripe you should measure.

Conductive fiber spun through the yarn itself: no visible grid, softest drape, the choice for ESD smocks, cleanroom-adjacent electronics wear and customer-facing technical staff. Care & laundering (the part that keeps the certificate alive): woven conductive architectures survive industrial laundering, but chemistry still matters — fabric softeners coat the carbon filaments and can insulate the very fibers doing the work, harsh optical brighteners degrade FR anti-static finishes, and tumble temperatures above the label figure shorten elastic and thread life. EN 1149-5 is the European garment standard for electrostatic-dissipative protective clothing. It specifies design requirements and requires the fabric to pass EN 1149-1 (surface resistivity) or EN 1149-3 (charge decay), so the garment can safely bleed static charge away — as part of a fully earthed system — in explosive atmospheres.

Is anti-static workwear the same as ESD clothing for electronics?

They overlap but are specified differently. A lattice of conductive carbon (or carbon-nylon) filaments woven into the fabric, typically on a 5 mm stripe or 5×5 mm grid pattern. The grid gives the fabric permanent static-dissipative performance that survives industrial laundering, unlike topical anti-static sprays that wash out.

Can anti-static workwear also be flame resistant and hi-vis?

Yes. Our FR anti-static line combines EN 1149-5 with EN ISO 11612 flame protection, and can add EN ISO 20471 hi-vis and IEC 61482-2 arc protection in one multi-norm garment — certified together as a single garment with one document set, which is what petrochemical and rail tenders now demand.

What is the MOQ and lead time for custom anti-static workwear?

MOQ is 500 pieces per style per color for custom OEM (300 for FR anti-static and multi-norm builds). Samples take 7–12 days; bulk production 30–40 days after approval, including inline resistivity spot-testing.

How do I verify a garment is genuinely anti-static?

Three checks: verify the EN 1149-5 certificate and its Notified Body number in the EU NANDO database; confirm the fabric test report (EN 1149-1 or 1149-3) with the issuing laboratory; and measure surface resistivity on delivered goods — a handheld megohmmeter check any distributor can run. Does anti-static performance wash out?

Not if the fabric uses woven-in conductive fibers — the grid is permanent and typically certified through 50+ industrial wash cycles. Topically treated fabrics do lose performance with laundering, which is why Reveluz builds on woven carbon-grid platforms and states the certified wash count on every label.

Which industries require EN 1149-5 clothing?

Any workplace with ATEX-classified explosive atmospheres: petrochemical and refineries, fuel handling and tank farms, spray painting, powder coating, flour and grain milling, pharmaceutical powder processing, ammunition, and gas distribution. Electronics assembly uses the related IEC 61340-5-1 ESD specification instead.
