What Is Flame Resistant Clothing?
Flame resistant (FR) clothing is workwear engineered to self-extinguish once an ignition source is removed, limiting burn injury from flash fires, electric arcs and combustible dust events. Protection comes either from inherently flame-resistant fibers such as aramids and modacrylics, or from flame-retardant treatments applied to cotton-rich fabrics and certified to a stated wash count. FR Fabric Doesn't Refuse to Burn. It Refuses to Keep Burning.
The engineering goal is measured in seconds and centimeters: char length under 100 mm, after-flame under 2 seconds (vertical flame test), and — on NFPA 2112 manikin burns — predicted body burn under 50% from a 3-second engulfment. Inherent fibers achieve it in the polymer; treated cottons achieve it in the finish chemistry. Both must also obey the quieter rule that ordinary workwear breaks: no melting. Polyester's drip injuries are why "just wear cotton over it" was never a plan.

The move: quote "aramid-grade protection," ship treated cotton, pocket the fiber-cost difference — invisible until wash 60 when the finish is gone and the label still says FR. Defense is chemical, not visual: demand the fiber content and platform in writing, match it to the mill certificate, and burn-test a swatch from the delivered lot (we include spares for exactly this). Can I wear regular clothes under FR garments?

Can FR clothing be made hi-vis yellow or orange?

A listing, not a lab slip
NFPA 2112 certification is product-listing based: an accredited certifier (UL, SEI) tests the garment — vertical flame on fabric and components, heat and thermal shrinkage resistance, and the 3-second instrumented manikin burn with its ≤ 50% predicted body-burn ceiling — then lists it publicly and audits ongoing production. Practical consequences: the listing is checkable online in two minutes, "tested to 2112" without a listing is a red flag with extra steps, and component compliance means thread, closures and labels were part of the evaluation. When comparing quotes, ask each supplier for their listing reference and manikin body-burn figure; the silence you sometimes get is itself a data point.
The code string is the contract
11612's genius is granularity: A1/A2 (surface/edge flame spread) is mandatory, then B (convective) and C (radiant) levels 1–3/1–4 cover most industrial fire exposure, with D and E grading molten aluminium and iron splash and F contact heat. A garment marked A1 B1 C1 passed exactly those tests at exactly those levels — nothing more is implied, and level 1 is an entry grade, not a flagship. Under the EU PPE Regulation these garments are Category III: Notified Body type-examination plus production surveillance, with the NB's four-digit number on the certificate checkable in NANDO. Buyers' rule: specify the letters your hazard needs, verify the number that certifies them, and treat any quote quoting "11612" bare as an unfinished sentence.
Systems thinking the standards assume
Three rules thread through every FR regime without always being printed in bold. First, the outermost layer must be flame resistant — certified base layers under melting shells fail as a system. Second, underlayers must not melt: cotton, wool or FR knits next to skin, never bare synthetics that heat conduction can liquefy. Third, layering changes performance — usually upward, thanks to insulating air gaps, but only tested combinations may claim system values. Certified FR fabric dominates the costing, so large price gaps between "identical" quotes live in the cloth: treated where inherent was implied, 6.5 oz where 7.5 was specified, a 50-wash finish quoted against a 100-wash spec. Ask every supplier to split fabric and making-up as separate lines and to name the platform, weight and wash count in the quote itself — three fields that make quotes comparable and frauds visible. Divide by honest wear-life, then decide
A $30 inherent coverall serving 150 industrial washes costs $0.20 per cycle; a $22 treated garment certified to 50 costs $0.44 — the "expensive" option is half the price where it counts, before counting re-procurement admin. Reverse cases exist too: short-season contractors and high-turnover crews often genuinely belong on treated economics. Type certification is a fixed cost amortized across a style's life — one reason established platforms undercut novel designs. What is the difference between inherent and treated FR fabric?
Inherent FR fabrics (aramid, modacrylic blends) are flame resistant at the fiber level — the protection is built into the polymer and lasts the garment's life. FR-treated fabrics (typically cotton or cotton-nylon) gain flame resistance from a chemical finish that is certified to a stated number of industrial washes. Both are legitimate; the difference is where the protection lives and how long the label promises it.
What is the difference between NFPA 2112 and NFPA 70E?
NFPA 2112 is a garment standard for protection against short-duration flash fire, common in oil and gas — garments are tested including a 3-second manikin burn with a body-burn limit of 50%. NFPA 70E is a workplace standard for electrical safety that requires arc-rated clothing selected by incident energy. Arc-rated garments are always flame resistant, but NFPA 2112 garments are not automatically arc-rated.
What do the code letters on EN ISO 11612 mean?
EN ISO 11612 grades performance by hazard: A1/A2 limited flame spread (surface/edge ignition), B convective heat (B1–B3), C radiant heat (C1–C4), D molten aluminium splash (D1–D3), E molten iron splash (E1–E3), and F contact heat (F1–F3). A garment label like A1 B1 C1 tells you exactly which tests it passed and at what level — higher numbers mean higher protection.
Can flame resistant clothing also be hi-vis?
Yes. FR hi-vis garments combine EN ISO 11612 or NFPA 2112 flame protection with EN ISO 20471 or ANSI 107 visibility, using FR-certified fluorescent fabric and flame-tested reflective tape. The combination must be certified on the finished garment — ordinary fluorescent polyester melts, so a standard hi-vis vest worn over FR clothing actually adds fuel.
How should FR clothing be washed?
Follow the label: no chlorine bleach, no fabric softener (it coats fibers with a flammable film), no hard-water soap buildup, wash separately from flammable-residue garments, and repair only with FR fabric and thread. Inherent fabrics keep protection for the garment's life; treated fabrics keep it for the certified wash count printed on the label.
How long does FR clothing last, and when should it be retired?
Service life is governed by condition, not just age: retire garments that are ripped, threadbare, contaminated with flammable substances that laundering cannot remove, repaired with non-FR materials, or past the certified wash count on treated fabrics. Well-maintained inherent garments commonly serve 2–4 years of industrial rotation; a written inspection rhythm matters more than any calendar.
What is the MOQ and lead time for custom FR clothing?
MOQ is 500 pieces per style per color for custom OEM (300 for multi-norm and oil & gas program builds). Samples take 10–14 days because certified FR fabric is procured to order; bulk production runs 35–45 days after approval, including inline seam and label audits.
How do I verify FR clothing is genuine?
Four checks: verify the NFPA 2112 certification (UL/SEI listing) or EN ISO 11612 certificate with its Notified Body number in NANDO; confirm the fabric test report number with the issuing laboratory; match the fabric name and weight on the report to the garment label; and request the fabric mill certification. Does 100% cotton clothing count as flame resistant?
No. Untreated cotton is merely non-melting — it ignites and continues to burn. Cotton's role today is as a comfortable base fiber for FR-treated fabrics, not as protection by itself.
What FR clothing do oil and gas operators require?
