The base-standard trap worth naming once: EN ISO 13688 covers ergonomics, innocuousness, sizing, ageing, compatibility and marking, and almost every hazard standard references it — but the standard itself states plainly that it is not a proof of protection against any specific hazard on its own, and must be used together with the relevant performance standard. A garment marked "EN ISO 13688" with no hazard standard beside it is certified for its labelling and ergonomics, not for flame, arc, static, chemical or visibility. How do I choose the right safety clothing?
By hazard, not garment name. What is the difference between EN ISO 13688 and a hazard standard?
EN ISO 13688 is the base standard for all protective clothing — ergonomics, innocuousness, sizing, ageing, marking — and it explicitly is not proof of protection against any hazard on its own. Hazard protection comes from a performance standard layered on top (11612 for flame, 61482 for arc, 20471 for visibility, and so on). "13688 only" means certified for labelling, not for protection.

"Why China?" deserves a better answer than a price list, and a more honest one than a brochure. The advantage that matters for certified safety clothing is not labour cost — it is the clustered ecosystem of certified inputs and accredited verification that a Category III garment physically depends on, sitting within a short truck ride of the sewing floor. Decades of clustering, not just cheap labour
The real advantage is not wages — it is a dense cluster of FR and fluorescent mills, flame-tested reflective tape makers, aramid and anti-static yarn suppliers, accredited test labs and Notified Body relationships within a short logistics radius. For certified PPE this ecosystem is the moat: it is why sampling is fast, why nine functions live under one roof, and why several "nearshore" lines still import their certified cloth from here. Cut-and-sew moves in a year; this took decades.
Surveillance history, not a one-off test
Category III PPE requires ongoing Notified Body surveillance, and a factory that has held those relationships for years is buying you a live compliance file, not a certificate on a wall. Can you really certify all nine functions, or do you trade some?
We manufacture each function in-house on the certified-textile ecosystem described above, and we supply a garment-level certificate per standard for each — the honest test of a genuine multi-function factory versus a "one-stop shop" that quietly buys in half its range. Where a highly specialised item sits outside our core (certain gas-tight Type 1–3 chemical suits, for instance) we say so plainly and scope it rather than pretending. Ask for the certificate per category; the answer separates makers from middlemen, and we would rather you ask us that question than not.
How do you keep a multi-function program consistent across years?
Locked bills of materials per style, archived shade masters (physical and spectrophotometric) for fluorescents, held graded patterns so year-two matches year-one, and an annual program review covering wash revalidation, standards updates and hazard re-mapping per role. For certified categories, Notified Body surveillance keeps the production honest, not just the prototype. The supplier who warns you before your tender does — because a standard revised or a role drifted — is the one worth keeping, and that review sits on our calendar for every program account.

Can you hold buffer stock and run phased deliveries?
Yes, in writing. Annual agreements can hold finished-goods buffer (10–15% of volume) or, more capital-efficiently, certified greige and tape with cut-to-call-off in 12–20 days. Large multi-country programs ship phased against a delivery schedule, kitted per site and named per crew for mobilizations. Buffer terms — quantity, storage window, drawdown price, disposition — go in the contract, because handshake buffers end relationships. For seasonal categories (winter waterproof, summer hi-vis) we plan buffer around the peak, not the average.
What happens if a bulk lot fails inspection?
Production holds on that lot; we trace whether it is fabric (back to the mill under our purchase terms), a certified component (tape, thread, hardware), or construction (re-work), and you are notified at failure, not at shipment, with a recovery plan and revised dates. For certified categories the Notified Body is informed where surveillance requires. It has happened — a reflective-tape batch failing retained retroreflectivity after wash testing, caught before shipment — and that buyer is still a buyer, largely because the news came from us first. Any factory claiming zero deviations ever is describing its reporting, not its production.
What Safety Clothing Costs, Taken Apart Honestly
Unit price is the least informative number on a safety-clothing quote, because two garments with the same photo can differ by half in fabric grade, component quality and the certification behind them. Here is where the money actually goes across the range — and the arithmetic (cost per wear, landed cost, consolidation savings) that lets a committee compare quotes on substance instead of on the smallest number in the spreadsheet.
The certificate lives in the cloth
Across every function, certified fabric is the largest single cost, and the gap between a cheap and a proper garment usually hides there — a lighter FR, an uncertified fluorescent, a treated fabric sold as inherent. This is why the fabric spec must be nailed in writing and why substitution is the category's oldest trick. Negotiate the platform honestly (does this role need inherent or will treated do?) and you save real money; grind the making-up cost alone and you save cents while inviting a shortcut where the certificate lives.
Cheap to cut, expensive to lose
Triple-stitched seams, bartacks, FR thread, flame-tested tape and quality hardware are a few cents each and the entire service life — and, on certified garments, the certificate itself. Cut-price suppliers save exactly here because it is invisible in a photo. We price these as standard, not upgrades, because a component that can be struck from a quote will be struck from a quote, and a seam or a certificate that fails in month three costs far more than the thread ever saved.
The only number that ranks garments honestly
Landed price divided by honest service life reorders the league table: a certified garment that lasts and stays compliant beats a cheaper one that fades below its Class or blows a seam — but not always, and a well-chosen mid-spec garment in light use can win. The point is the arithmetic, not the grade. Proof, Not Promises: The Inspection Chain Behind Every Program
Anyone can certify a prototype; the discipline is keeping garment ten thousand identical to garment one. Our quality system is built around a simple rule — catch the deviation at the point where it is cheap, never at the dock where it is catastrophic — and every stage of it is open to your own inspectors.
The certificate arrives on a roll
Every roll of certified fabric and every reel of reflective tape is received against the locked bill of materials: mill certificate checked, lot number logged, shade compared to the archived master, and — for FR and fluorescent cloth — batch verification testing where the program demands it. Because in safety clothing the certificate physically lives in the material, the most important inspection of the whole order happens before a single panel is cut.
Substitution is an amendment, never an event
The bill of materials agreed at pre-production sign-off — fabric, tape, thread, hardware, labels, down to the zip supplier — is locked. If a component becomes unavailable, production holds and you get a written substitution request with the compliance impact assessed, because on certified garments a swapped thread or tape is not a sourcing detail, it is a certification event. The silent substitution that plagues this industry is structurally impossible when the BOM is a contract document.
Two audits while correction is still cheap
At roughly a fifth of production, an inline audit checks measurements against the graded size chart, seam construction, tape placement and branding against the approved sample — early enough that a drifting operation is corrected, not compounded. At 60% a second audit catches the slower drifts: shade consistency across dye lots, stitch density fatigue, hardware batches. Findings go to you at the point of failure with a recovery plan, not silently absorbed.
The report you can hold against the goods
Final inspection samples to AQL 2.5 across critical, major and minor defect classes, with a photographic report keyed to the approved sample and size chart — measurements, tape geometry, label content, packing assortment. The report ships with the goods and is written so a third party could repeat it: defect definitions stated, sampling plan stated, photos traceable to cartons. Every garment answers "where did you come from?"
Fabric lot, tape reel, thread batch and production date chain to the carton and, on certified programs, to the garment label — so a question raised about one garment in year two can be answered with the mill certificate of the actual cloth it was cut from. On certified hi-vis, the truth is narrower: the fluorescent field is defined by the standard's chromaticity coordinates — yellow-green, orange-red — and a brand's "special yellow" either sits inside the certified area or the garment loses its Class. Each one cleared against the garment's standard
Embroidery, screen print, heat transfer, woven badges, reflective-transfer logos and printed care/brand labels — chosen per garment, because each interacts differently with each function. FR garments get FR thread and flame-tested transfers; anti-static garments refuse insulating badges across the grid; hi-vis placement stays off the minimum certified areas. Read them as a chain, not a pile
The type-examination certificate proves the finished garment design passed the standard; the test reports prove which fabric, tape and construction passed; the mill and component certificates prove the bulk materials are the same ones tested; the inline and AQL reports prove the production matched the design; the Declaration of Conformity binds the maker to all of it. Each link answers a different failure mode — a genuine certificate over substituted cloth, or genuine cloth sewn into an untested design — which is why one impressive PDF is never enough and the chain is everything.
How a cardboard shelf gives itself away
A certificate that names a fabric but no garment. A Notified Body number that returns nothing in NANDO, or a body with no PPE scope. Test reports older than the fabric platform they supposedly cover. A "certificate" that is actually a test report with a decorative border. EN ISO 13688 offered alone as if it were hazard protection. Refusal to share documents before deposit "for confidentiality". Each is a two-minute check, each is taught step-by-step in our verification guide, and any one of them appearing is your cue to shorten the shortlist.

Standards revise, Notified Body certificates expire, surveillance audits recur annually — a compliance library is a living thing. Program volume moves by sea — 25 to 40 days by lane, cheap per garment, planned into the calendar. China–Europe rail lands in 12 to 28 days and quietly wins for EU, UK, Turkey and Central Asian fleets that cannot wait for water but refuse air prices; insulated winter programs for Kazakh and Caspian sites ride it routinely. Air, at 5 to 8 days, is for launches, samples and gap-filling a stockout — expensive per kilo and occasionally the cheapest thing on the P&L when a mobilization date is at stake. Every quote states its mode and Incoterm assumption so comparisons are honest.
Why we quote the landed number
Duty on workwear varies by fabric content, construction and destination; brokerage, port fees and inland haulage vary by lane; and an ex-works price that looked sharp can land twenty percent worse than a DDP quote that looked plain. Under DDP we carry freight, clearance and duty and you sign a single landed number per unit — which also makes the China-versus-nearshore comparison an arithmetic exercise instead of a debate. Fade, damage, contamination, drift
Fluorescents fade below their Class while still looking "fine"; FR fabrics lose protection to flammable contamination long before they look dirty; tape delaminates one wash at a time; a torn cuff is a thermal gap. The in-service discipline is simple: workers flag damage, supervisors compare against the goods-in photo at set intervals, and contaminated or damaged certified garments leave service rather than lingering. Laundering follows the care label's chemistry — domestic softener alone can kill an FR treatment — and industrial-wash fleets follow the ISO 15797 data we supply.
One meeting that keeps year three compliant
Once a year, program accounts sit with us for an hour: wash-count and retained-performance data reviewed, shade masters compared, standards updates walked through, roles re-mapped where the site's work changed, size curve corrected against actual issue data, and the reorder planned against the season. Does Reveluz offer OEM and ODM custom manufacturing?
Yes. OEM means we build to your design, tech pack or sample with your labels; ODM means you adapt a proven, already-certified style from our library and apply your brand. Customization covers fabric and weight, colourways, reflective-tape placement, pocket architecture, sizing including women's fits, logos (embroidery, screen, heat-transfer, woven badges) and packaging. How do I verify a safety clothing certificate is genuine and applies to the garment?
Check four things: that a certificate exists for each claimed standard; that it names the finished garment, not only the fabric; that the Notified Body number (for CE) can be verified in the EU NANDO database; and that the fabric, tape, thread and hardware on the test report match the actual garment. For Category III PPE such as FR, arc and anti-static clothing, ongoing production surveillance is also required, not a one-off test. Which safety clothing do different industries need?
