The oldest trick in workwear: quote a heavy fabric, ship a lighter one, and hope nobody weighs it. The garment looks right and wears out early. Defense: put the exact gsm and composition on the spec, weigh the pre-production sample, and test-verify a bulk sample. We state fabric weight and blend on every quote, supply mill test data, and welcome you to weigh what arrives — because a supplier who substitutes fabric is a supplier who will substitute everything else.
Seams that save cents and cost the garment
One row of stitching where there should be three, no bartacks at the pocket mouths and fly, chain-stitch that unravels from one broken thread — invisible in a photo, catastrophic in service. The "best" fabric is the one matched to the trade, climate and laundry — there is no single answer, which is why we ask before we quote.
How long should industrial workwear last?
A well-built garment in general trade use typically lasts 12–24 months of daily wear; heavy abrasion (mining, construction) shortens it, light duty extends it. Service life is set by fabric abrasion resistance, seam and reinforcement quality, and laundering. Compare suppliers on cost-per-wear (price ÷ service life), not unit price — the cheaper garment is often the more expensive one once you count replacements.
What does EN ISO 13688 actually certify?
EN ISO 13688 is the base standard for protective clothing: it sets general requirements for harmlessness (no harm to the wearer), sizing, ageing, compatibility, marking and the information supplied. It does not certify protection against a specific hazard — that requires a hazard standard (FR, arc, hi-vis, chemical) layered on top. It is the foundation every certified protective garment is built on, including the certified versions of this range.
Coveralls or two-piece — which is better?
Coveralls give faster donning, better dirt exclusion and one-garment simplicity, ideal for mechanics, painters and dirty environments; two-piece (jacket/shirt + trousers) gives better temperature control, easier laundering, independent sizing and part replacement. Can workwear be made for industrial laundry?

Rental-rated workwear uses shrink-controlled colorfast fabric, laundry-proof hardware and reinforced seams validated over repeated cycles. Always tell your supplier the laundering regime up front so the fabric, thread and trims are chosen to survive it.
What is triple stitching and does it matter?
Triple stitching (or double-felled seams) uses multiple needle rows so the load is shared and one broken thread does not open the seam — it is the single biggest construction factor in workwear durability. Substitution is the oldest trick in workwear, and the defense is documentation plus a supplier who invites the check. What the base standard actually does
EN ISO 13688 is the general standard for protective clothing, and almost every hazard standard references it as a base. It does not test protection against any specific hazard; instead it sets the requirements every protective garment must meet regardless of hazard: innocuousness (the garment and its materials must not harm the wearer — no skin irritation, safe pH, low heavy-metal content), ergonomics and sizing (a standardized size-designation system and fit requirements), ageing and dimensional change (behaviour after cleaning), compatibility (garments worn together must not compromise each other), and marking and information (the pictograms, care labels and user information supplied). When you see a garment certified to EN ISO 11612 or EN ISO 20471, EN ISO 13688 is the layer underneath it. For pure industrial workwear with no certified hazard property, 13688 is the relevant general reference for construction and information quality even where formal certification is not claimed — a useful thing to understand when a tender asks for "compliance with relevant standards."
The test numbers that predict service life
Durability is testable, and serious buyers ask for the tests. Martindale abrasion counts the rub cycles a fabric survives before wearing through (workwear fabrics commonly run tens of thousands of cycles; the number lets you compare like for like). Tear strength (e.g. by the ballistic or trapezoidal method) measures resistance to a tear propagating — critical for snag-prone trades. Tensile/seam strength measures how much force a seam holds before failure. Colorfastness (to washing, light and rubbing) predicts whether a branded garment stays the brand color. Dimensional stability (shrinkage) predicts whether it still fits after laundering. A spec sheet that lists only fabric weight is telling you one number out of five that matter; a factory that can supply all five tested them, which itself tells you something. When durable clothing has to become certified protection
The costliest specification errors live at the boundary between industrial workwear and certified PPE. Industrial workwear provides durability, function and appearance; it is not, by itself, protection against a hazard. The moment a risk assessment identifies flame, arc, chemical, static, visibility or impact risk, the garment for that role must be certified to the relevant hazard standard — EN ISO 11612 or NFPA 2112 (flame), IEC 61482 (arc), EN 13034 (chemical splash), EN 1149-5 (anti-static), EN ISO 20471 or ANSI 107 (high-visibility), EN 14404 (knee protection) — and that certification is a tested property of the finished garment, not a fabric adjective.
